Marine research ships have collected giant sea creatures including some unknown species in the deep waters of the Antarctic Ocean.

Sea spider-like creatures the size of dinner plates and jelly fish with six-meter tentacles were found on the ocean floor, more than 1,000 meters below the surface.

In order to identify the unknown species, the creatures will be sent to scientific centers for tissue sampling and DNA bar coding, Reuters reported.

The expedition shows the fatal consequences of environmental change in Antarctic waters will make it harder for marine organisms to grow and sustain calcium carbonate skeletons.

"It is predicted that the first effects of this will be seen in the cold, deep waters of Antarctica," said Martin Riddle.
